Downtown Leesburg
Lake County's largest city has a downtown area that is truly a site to see with its recently completed multi-million dollar streetscape project. Lined with old historical buildings, this picturesque downtown is home to quaint little restaurants, gift shops, antique stores and businesses to meet the needs of both residents and visitors alike.
The City was named as a Florida Main Street City in 1994 when the Downtown Business Association, the City of Leesburg and the Chamber of Commerce formed the Leesburg Partnership in a united effort to preserve the town's heritage. The Leesburg Partnership has assisted in the City's revitalization projects by hosting many public events and festivals which include Mardi Gras Street Party, the Mardi Gras Ball, the Christmas Parade, the Main Street Christmas Stoll, and the famous Leesburg Bikefest, to name just a few.
Fishing and Golf
If you love to fish, Leesburg is the place to go. With several lakes to chose from, you’ll be surrounded by natural beauty everywhere you turn. Lake Griffin is seven miles long and one-half mile wide. The north half of the lily-padded lake is considered best for bass using artificial worms, surface lures and shiners. In the winter there's plenty of speck and, in the summer you can fill your boat with panfish.
Lake Harris is the largest and many think the prettiest lake in the county. With an average depth of only 14 feet, bass and pan fishing are both very good. The Dora Canal is one of the most scenic natural adventures you'll find in Florida. Lined with majestic cypress trees it's likely you'll see an alligator or two resting along the bank or a raccoon family fishing for lunch. If you're a bird watcher, you'll enjoy the osprey, anhinga and herring.
Venetian Gardens is a 110-acre park that boasts amenities such as a public swimming pool with bath house, ball field, volleyball court, picnic tables and walking paths around Lake Harris. Enjoy a leisurely stroll across the pedestrian bridges leading to private islands that offer scenic views of the lake and the park's canals.
Lake County is also becoming known as a mecca for quality golf courses such as Continental Country Club and Pennbrooke Fairways. Public, private and semiprivate courses are scattered throughout the county and many have been designed by golf's finest.
